business because they're so underserved, that absolutely, we need to be and,

and look at Univision and Telemundo.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

They made billions out of serving,

yeah.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

The immigrant Spanish dom, non-college educated, whatever.

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

Not only that, but you've also won a number of prestigious awards,

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

that have absolutely nothing to do with FinTech.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

That's right.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

No relevance.

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

Can you share with us how you

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

ended up falling into FinTech?

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

It was definitely that, it was definitely

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

falling into FinTech because I am a marketing girl, uh, all my life.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

I, I started super young doing radio and then tv.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Um, and then just recently with the pandemic, I am, you know, looking at

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

how, our primarily communities of color, but literally Latinos were the ones

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

who were not only, we were losing more lives, but also had

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

the hardest economic hardship.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Um, there was just something where I thought, okay, who's gonna

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

explain in an easy way, what's a PPP loan or what's furlough or what?

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

And, you know, I have friends who are Ivy League college educated,

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

incredibly successful entrepreneurs, and they still were confused.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Right?

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

On how do I get this credit and, you know, what do I do to

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

get it, uh, forgiven or how?

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

And I literally, there's a friend of mine who's my co-founder is, has

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

been always been in finance, and he was like, you know what, like you

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

should launch a FinTech company.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

And I was, Are you on drugs, ? Like, it's just, that sounds,

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

that's the most ridiculous thing anybody said to me, right?

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Like, why, how, why, how?

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

And his whole thought process, which I now understand is I'm such an enthusiast,

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

you know, when it comes to representation in media, because I think that

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

whether it's conscious or unconscious, Bias is real if you have a brain

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

you have a bias.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

And the way we're perceived as a community is like, oh, you're immigrant,

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

you're poor, you're uneducated, you're old, you only speak Spanish.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

And really, media contributes tremendously to everything else.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

So I've, I'm a huge advocate and I do a lot with my nonprofit on

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

the Hollywood side and then also on the access to capital side for,

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

for entrepreneurs in my community.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

And he was saying, listen, you spent so much time there, but if

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

people had economic power in our community, that would be gone.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Like we could fund our movies, we could fund our companies, we could be those VCs.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Like it really starts with like understanding personal finance.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Like how do you do a budget?

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Like how do you start investing?

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

How do you not keep your money under the mattress?

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Which I'm telling you, our community still does.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

. In my own family, that's done not in a mattress, but close.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

And so, you know, at first I thought he's crazy.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Then I thought, okay, I'm going to try it out with an Instagram

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

page and see what happens.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

And then the response was amazing.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

And you know, just like those tech bros in Silicon Valley that a friend

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

of 'em says like, bro, I'll fund you.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

I had a couple of those, but on the Latina VC side where they're

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

like, this is a big idea, we're just gonna give you a term sheet.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

And I was like, this is kind of crazy.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

. Uh, but everything was just like front and center, that I'm a big believer, like the

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

universe sets you up where you have to be.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

And like every single sign, every day from what I read to who I spoke

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

to was all about me doing this.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

And I'm so excited and grateful for Javier, my co-founder and friend,

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

who pushed me really to do this, although I thought it was crazy and

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

that's how I'm, that's how I'm here.

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

How would you describe the Suma

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

mission in just very basic terms?

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Yeah, so our mission is super lofty.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

You know, it's almost like our mission should be our vision, which is something

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

you never gonna accomplish, but you try.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Um, but we really wanna be huge contributors in helping to close

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

the wealth gap in our community.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

The wealth gap in our community is massive.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

It's 20 cents to the dollar.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

So we have a long, long, long, long way to go to be able to really do that.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

And we see how people in our community work so hard, work, so

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

many jobs, you know, their work ethic is so extraordinary, yet they

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

just don't advance financially.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Right?

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

We are the biggest consumers though, right?

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

So it's like we're great for like the American economy, because we buy

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

everything.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

But when it came to the pandemic, we saw that entire families didn't even

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

have a thousand dollars in savings.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Uh, but we definitely have the Gucci bags and the expensive cars.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

So there's something there that, you know, we kind of need to change

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

the way our communities are thinking about not just being consumers,

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

but also being shareholders.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

So invest in the brands and in the things that you're already supporting

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

and loving, and maybe that'll, you know, be a change for the next generations.

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

So the FinTech journey is

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

relatively new for you?

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Yes.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

But I always probably cause we were like, what is she doing as a.....

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

so I'm a Type A Virgo person, right?

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Alpha Latina.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

So, although I know nothing about finance, uh, I did enroll in every

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

single professional certificate program available under the sun at

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

every single Ivy League University.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

So nights and weekends, I would kill myself 50 hours at nights

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

and on the weekends to fully understand like, what is this?

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Where is it going?

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Where are the gaps?

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Where does my community fit in?

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

So, yes, I am a marketing and communications girl with my

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Emmy's and my MTV cool awards.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Uh, yet I feel pretty confident in what I'm doing, where the market

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

is, where, where my community's going, what the needs are.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

We do a ton of social listening from our audience, so we're not

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

arrogant to say we know better.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

We know what to build for them, we don't.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Um, so yeah.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

So, but I interrupted your question.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

So yes, I am new, but uh, I try my best to be a little educated

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

on, on what the market is.

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

So my, my key question is, in that short

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

period of time, what do you think is the key thing that you have learned in FinTech

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

on that journey that you've been on so

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

far?

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

I think the, the key thing that I've learned

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

is that no matter how much you think you know your audience or

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

your consumer, you really don't.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Unless you've really done a good job listening to them.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Most FinTech companies launch with a product, so it's like, oh, we're

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

launching and this is what we do because this is what the community needs.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Um, we did the opposite.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

We, we launched by saying we're gonna give it a year to build

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

a brand, to build the trust.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Trust is paramount in our community, build the trust and, and build a community,

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

and then do a lot of social listening to really understand what the community.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

So I guess my one takeaway is be less arrogant to think that you know better,

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

um, and not just because you are that demo that you're serving, you're gonna know, I

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

would've never thought to build a product for a Gen Z for retirement, for example.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Right?

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

My own unconscious bias even towards my own community is, oh my gosh,

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

latino kids are so much in debt with student debt because they're enrolling

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

in college faster than anybody else.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

I should build a product for that, or I should, you know, team up

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

with a company that does that.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

That is on their list,

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

but as like number five, right?

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Like number one is how do they retire early?

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Right?

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Like I would, that's interesting.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

I would've never thought to build a product for an 18 year old kid on how to

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

retire early or how to buy a home because it's, you know, out of all the Gen Zs,

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

it's Latino, gen Z's is buying more homes.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

And you're like, how could it be those kids,

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

aren't those kids poor and immigrant and don't speak English?

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

No.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Right?

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

So there's so many opportunities, if you check out your bias and

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

you are like, listen to the data.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Right?

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

And really build for that.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Even if you're like, this is me, you know, I'm building it for me.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Like there's still so many differences within communities

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

that you don't know about.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

So I, I think that, I mean, I've learned that I don't know as much as

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

I thought I did from my own community.

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

When you look at how your community

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

is approaching FinTech and all the problems that, that go along

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

with it, and you'd mentioned trust is a huge one in of itself.

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

What opportunities do you see in the next five years for Suma

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

to really help bridge that gap?

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Yeah, I

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

mean for, for Suma and for everybody, right?

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

So the opportunity for every single brand, because even if I'm wildly successful,

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

it can't just be one company super serving 16 million Latinos and growing.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Right?

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

So there's an opportunity for everybody to just again, look at the data.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

And when you think about GDP growth, when you think about population

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

growth, when you think about who's launching more companies, when

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

you think about who's the fastest entering the workforce, it's Latinos.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

And it's young Latinos who are not immigrant, who speak English,

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

who are college educated.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

That is 80% of the US Latinos in this country.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Whereas even my own colleagues who lead FinTech companies for

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Latino's, everything's in Spanish.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

I'm like the majority of that 80% I was gonna ask you about that.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Speak English, right?

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

They consume the content in English.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

They struggle speaking Spanish to their parents.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

So when you, when people tell me we don't know how to acquire young Latinos,

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

so this is advice for everybody.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Um, we don't know how to acquire young Latinos.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

We already translated our website or our app.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

I'm like, oh God, like, it is great if you are targeting their parents

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

and their grandparents, right?

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

And if you are going after that 20% of the demo.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Not to say that's not an amazing business because they're so underserved

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

that absolutely we need to be and, and look at Univision and Telemundo,

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

they made billions out of serving

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

the immigrant Spanish dom, non-college educated, whatever.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

I want the 80%, not just because, oh my gosh, I just want more money

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

cuz it's 80% and it's numbers.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

But that 80% are the influencers of their older family members

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

and their communities.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

So if you wanna get to total market within the Latino

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

community, you focus on the youth.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Now you can't be telling, you can't be translating your website or you can't be

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

saying things like send money home, right?

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Like home is here.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Like the way you're marketing towards this demographic, you

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

gotta be very, very careful.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

They're American, but they're still very proud to be Latino.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

So it's something we call the 200% generation, a hundred percent

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Latino, a hundred percent American.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

And that's the opportunity.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

I mean, there's no comp, no company's gonna really be able to

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

futureproof their brand if they're not in business with this demo.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

And you can't, and a lot of CEOs say this to me, very funny.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Well, if they speak English, we're already reaching them.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

And I'm always like, well, how?

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

How you doing?

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Well, first of all, it's like, yeah, you're reaching 'em.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

You're not touching 'em.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Very huge difference.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

But I'm like, well, how you doing with them?

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

I mean, do you have them at scale?

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

And the answer is always no.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Even from the massive FinTech names or the banking institutions, no.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

I'm like, cuz you are not connecting emotionally with them.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

They don't feel like they belong with you.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

So the opportunity whether you're in finance or in any other company in

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

the US, is to really fully understand how this growth market that,

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

this is data, and I'm just not an enthusiastic because I'm a Latina, that's

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

the growth demo for the future, right?

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

So, um, really, so the opportunity is massive and the opportunity is in

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

making them feel like they belong.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

They don't feel like they belong in their own country.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

People continuously ask 'em, where are you from?

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Be like, ah, you know, from LA.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

And they're like, no, no, no, but really?

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

They'll tell you the neighborhood from Santa Monica.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

No, no, no.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

But really?

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

What they really mean is like, where are your parents or

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

grandparents country of origin?

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

And they, they get pushed so hard cuz they could never be American enough.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

They visit the parents of, of countries of origin or grandparents

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

and they're too American.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Oh my gosh, they don't speak Spanish.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Oh my god, you're such a . So it's a really horrible thing to feel as

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

a, as youth in America, to feel like you're not from here, you're not

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

from there and you don't belong.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

So any brand that cracks that, and makes them truly feel like that what, I mean,

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

obviously finance is massive, but in anything, that's the winning ticket.

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

So you, you'd mentioned something

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

earlier that, that came to mind and really looking at the state of trust in

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

financial services ecosystem and how much it is disconnected from not, not just

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

the Latino population, but in general.

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

What do you see?

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

What role do you see Suma playing in building that trust and

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

helping that younger generation transfer that trust over to their

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

parents and their grandparents?

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

Because I remember hearing a story you were telling yesterday at one

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

of the sessions about how one of your family members still handles

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

sensitive, I'm trying to think of how you worded it, but it was,

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Was it my mom?

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

In my, in my, I don't remember

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

who it was.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

She's like, stop using me in your examples.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

But, uh, I'm sure it was.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

But you mean like that they just don't trust the financial advisors

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

and they don't trust the banks?

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

Yeah, yeah.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Yeah.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

I mean, listen, there's, there's distrust from so many groups in the US so we

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

can't just say this is a Latino thing.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

But Latinos tend to have it a bit more heightened just because, the trauma

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

of like, you know, how they lost it all in their countries of origin or,

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

or an immigrant thing in, in a way.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

So, it's gonna be harder to change that mindset with the older demographics.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

You know, my mom is 80, right?

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

So for her to trust my financial advisor, I don't know if that

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

will ever happen in her lifetime.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Right?

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Um, so that's why I bet on youth because I know that they, at least

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

the youth are those influencers and they, in, in our community, we see,

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

at least in, in Suma, out of like our 600,000, uh, consumers that we have now,

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

they manage up to three financial accounts for their family members.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Right?

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

So that's super interesting cuz you're like, oh my God, this kid ha knows

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

nothing about finance yet they're responsible for manage, managing financial

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

accounts for their older family members.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

So that's where we're like, empower them, give them the tools, give

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

them the information, give them the education, because that's

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

gonna translate clearly to them.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

But hopefully it'll spill over to the older generations that they trust their

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

kids, but as they become parents.Right?

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

They're able to sort of break that cycle of, okay, I don't trust, and it

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

just keeps going and going and going.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Um, so, you know, I, I, I think our role is to really build a brand

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

and build a community that makes them feel, again, like they belong.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Belonging is a massive human need in that pyramid of, of needs that

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

we all learned about in college is right there next to food and shelter.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

So until you make somebody feel like they belong with your company, with

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

your brand, with your community, there's gonna be no true trust.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

So, um, for us, the role is that making sure, and people say, well,

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

why couldn't somebody who's not a Latino, you know, download your app?

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Like, I love it.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

I'm Asian, or I'm Black, or, I'm.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Oh, you can, but I wanna make sure that my community understands

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

that this was not an afterthought.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Like this is built by people like them, for them, for anybody

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

else who's useful, of course.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

But we never get that.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

We we're never seen that way.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

We're always like, oh, we translated that right?

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Oh yeah, let, they'll throw you a bone.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Um, and for us, we just want our culture, um, to be front and center.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

If anybody else finds it useful, that's awesome, but we're

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

definitely hyper focused on first, super serving our community.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

And also selfishly, again, if you look at the data, that is the demo

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

that is 19 years old versus 45.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

You know, when you think about the lifetime of a consumer, if you think

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

about who is ca, gonna carry all Americans on their shoulders for

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

social security and at retirement, it's this young, thriving community.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

So I definitely wanna empower them in the benefit of all Americans.

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

So yesterday during one of the

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

sessions that, that you were on the panel of, something was brought up and

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

you had a really interesting response to it, and I, I just, I wanted to, I

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

wanted to bring it to the audience.

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

You know, the discussion was around seeing the cycle of poverty in

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

communities, um, especially from those who were based on early, recent,

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

I should say recent immigration.

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

How do you see Suma successfully breaking that cycle?

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Yeah.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

I mean, I think that's why we're so focused with our Sumaversity, which

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

is our like financial side of it, fi, financial education side of it.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

To really learn what none of us learned.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Right?

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

And I talked yesterday about how I have friends who are massive

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

celebrities, you would know the names, but I'm not gonna mention them.

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

Oh man.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Elected officials.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

So you would also know, um, and they, you know, just brilliant people with,

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

you know, MBAs, at Harvard and Stanford.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

And, and they're a mess with their personal finances.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Right?

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

They're already so famous that they can't, they're embarrassed to trust anyone

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

to say, I don't know what a 401K is.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

I don't know how to invest.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

I don't know how to do a budget.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Um, so I think financial education is really, really paramount, not just

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

in break, breaking the poverty cycle.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Because there's a lot of people in our community, believe it or not, that are

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

not poor and they still don't know how to ha you know, they could be investing

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

millions of dollars that they have under their mattress, like we say, under our

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

gold cho, and they don't know what to do with it because they don't trust people.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

So, yes, it'll help, um, obviously end the cycle of poverty for people who are

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

in that, um, uh, socioeconomic level.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

But it's not exclusive for them.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Right?

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

You can be very well educated.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

I mentioned yesterday, my mother has a PhD.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

She's very well educated.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

She's a psychologist, so you should think like mom, like what you thought

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

about this when you were in Mexico?

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

This is not Mexico.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

This is Sure.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Like you should know better to trust my financial advisor of 25 years.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

She still doesn't do it.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

So we need to end like the way we think about money for everyone.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

It's not just for people who don't have the means or people who

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

don't speak English or are recent immigrants and having a hard time

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

in the country, it cuts across.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

So financial education for me is, super, super critical.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

But the way that it exists today in banks and in other places

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

is just incredibly, I'm sorry.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

I mean, and a lot of 'em are my clients, but it's really boring.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

You know, you look at it and you're more confused after you read whatever it says.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

It's just like, I can't.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

So we are very different, you know?

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

We'll explain what a avocado, if your, what your credit score is.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

So we'll say Guatemala or wa Ready, you know, how ripe is your credit?

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Uh, or we'll explain, uh, hard and soft credit inquiry with a soft

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

and a hard shell tortilla, right?

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

And, and we'll add ourselves to the conversation on a Tuesday so we can

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

hashtag a Taco Tuesday and be within the algorithm of what everyone's, but you

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

learned a hard and soft credit inquiry.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

So we wanna be where we meet, where people are.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

We're very pop culture driven on how we do finance and financial education.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

We're super fun.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

We're funny, but we think that that's what it's gonna take.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Cuz the way it's been done so far, it just hasn't worked.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Not just for Latinos, but I think for everyone else,

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

The most common cause of

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

bad customer experience,

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

isn't that high tech?

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

It's embarrassingly simple.

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

Yep.

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

It's answering questions.

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

In e-commerce, it's really easy to get bogged down with common questions,

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

whether that's Where's my package?

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

How do I return or exchange this item?

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

Or just to cancel a subscription.

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

So we're at MSX 2022, if I haven't already mentioned it, um, at a

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

beautiful resort here at Snowbird.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Absolutely.

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

And what do you hope that the

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

attendees that attended the panel yesterday are going home with after

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

hearing you speak?

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Well, I, I thought the movie was incredible.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

If, if people haven't seen it, try to find it.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

I know it's in some circuit with a filmmaker doing her rounds, and I'm sure

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

you interviewed her and it's called Savvy, and I think the biggest takeaway, which is

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

exactly what I was talking about, is you see people from all walks of life, right?

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

You see a white man that committed suicide for being in incredible credit card debt.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

But you see an Asian woman who's incredibly on, on top of her

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

finances and then you see a Latina who said, I don't wanna continue

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

with this cycle of poverty in my household, so it's gonna end with me.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

So I think we all learn that we know so little about money that

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

money's something that we don't

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

speak enough to our children about.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

That it needs to start really, really young and not til you are in trouble

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

after college where you've taken all this credit card debt or student debt.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Um, so for me, you know, yesterday was so important to see that we're

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

all in this together in a way.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Doesn't matter, your gender, doesn't matter your race, doesn't matter your

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

age, your college education, your awards, um, your social media profile.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Uh, we could all benefit from better financial education.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Um, and obviously there's so much out there, right?

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Already there's incredible FinTechs and products and services where, where you

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

can just, um, download an app and start investing with $5 and things that, but,

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

we, even people in the audience were like, but exactly how do I get started?

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

How do I do it?

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

So I think eradicating the shame, um, acknowledging that we're

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

all in this together, that it's something none of us grew up with.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Even if you went to an incredible Ivy League school, it's okay not

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

to know cuz they didn't teach you.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Um, and then, you know, we gotta leverage, leverage technology and data to be able to

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

advance all of our communities together.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

And that's why.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

I love MX.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

You know, obviously I'm, I'm at the conference because of them and we use

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

them to, uh, for our consumers to, uh, be able to connect their accounts.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

We talked to a lot of other providers before and, you know, I just

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

felt like I belonged here, right?

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

I mean, from the incredible customer service that they give you, but

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

also to the alignment in our mission in what, you know, MX stands for

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

as a company, we stand for as a company, it just really felt right.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

So obviously, we couldn't be doing everything that we do for

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

our community into really helping them better their finances if

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

they didn't know where they stand.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

And of course, that means the data and to continue to track and to have all

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

those insights that we rely on MX as our partner, um, to absolutely, you

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

know, advance our community forward.

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

If you were to give FinTech founders

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

one piece of advice, on building a FinTech company, what would that be?

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Don't think about building your funnel as an afterthought.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Don't think about building a community as an afterthought.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

At the same time as you are obsessing with your product, and I did say earlier,

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

make sure that once you build your product, you really fully understand

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

that, that is a massive need that that community needs.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

But let's say you do have that data and you're all ready to go.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Um, most FinTech companies launch, they have a great product and then it's really,

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

really hard to get those customers.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Right?

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

The mentality tends to be, if I build it, they will come.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

And particularly for communities of color who are now not a niche, but when

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

you think about, you know, Gen Z Gen Alpha, that's the new American majority.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Um, you are gonna absolutely need to think hard on how are you building community?

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

So as important as your CTO, uh, and everybody on your tech team, you need to

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

have somebody building that community.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

So once you have an incredible product, the community is right there and that

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

you're not scrambling later of like,

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

oh my gosh, how much money do I need to throw into Facebook, Instagram,

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

TikTok ads to acquire the customers?

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Because that is just a really losing proposition.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

So in a nutshell, don't leave community last.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Uh, put it on the top as important as when you're building your

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

product.

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

That's fantastic.

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

That is something that has been a theme with a number of folks that I've

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

talked to is, is really that, that mission, that purpose, that community

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

making everybody feel as part of one, um, has been a very common theme and

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

I'm glad to hear that it continues.

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

Now, we've had lots of conversation about a bunch of different

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

things, um, and great information.

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

Is there anything that maybe I missed that you wanted to make

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

sure that the audience heard?

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Uh, I don't think you missed anything.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

I mean, I can't reiterate enough, uh, for everyone, right?

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

What an incredible opportunity our demographic is.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Uh, when people think, why would you build something for a niche?

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

I'm like, it's not a niche.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

And without them, GDP would be in the negative.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

So pay close attention to where the market is going.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Pay close attention to, um, to where the big opportunities are and, um, I just,

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

obviously I'm a big advocate for my community just as a way to really, really

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

future proofing any brand or any company.

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

So what's the

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

best way for people to either reach out to you or to the rest of the

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

Suma team to find out more and to see if, if this fits for them?

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Yes, for sure.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

And we're super collaborative, so do reach out.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Best way to reach out to me is on my LinkedIn, um, and you know, my email

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

is there and my contact info is there.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Um, so yeah, I think that's, that's the, the best way.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Um, obviously you can check us out anywhere.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Sumawealth.com is our, is our website.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

And then we're on every social platform as

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

well.

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

Fantastic.

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

Well, I'm gonna go ahead and put all that information in the show notes, as well

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

as, in the description so everybody can just quickly click on the links for that.

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

Beatriz, thank you so much for sitting down.

Tedd Huff - Host, Fintech Confidential:

:

I know you're in a hurry to get to the airport to head home.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

No, no.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

I'm totally good.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Thank you so much for having me, and thank you for not having your lunch.

Beatriz Acevedo | Suma:

Just sit down with me and have this conversation.

:

Thank you so much
